Mark McCarthy, the district’s chief business officer, described a steering‑committee process that produced a hybrid option aimed at increasing dedicated parking from about 58 stalls to as many as 78 while keeping bus circulation inside the campus loop for safety. He said the hybrid design includes a covered walkway for students to wait out of the weather and a raised crosswalk across Mango Street to improve pedestrian safety.
Members of the public and trustees raised neighborhood concerns about traffic flows on Mango Street, jaywalking and whether reducing the length of the parent drop‑off area would push cars into the street. Staff said the designs are schematic, will require city coordination for any right‑of‑way changes, and that no final approval was being requested tonight. Trustees asked staff to pursue renderings and to continue stakeholder outreach — including discussions with direct neighbors and the city’s traffic staff — before returning with refined designs.
