DA reports 1,250 pending cases; county begins 2027 budget planning

Cheryl Nielsen, First Assistant District Attorney, told the Public Safety Committee the District Attorney’s Office is managing approximately 1,250 pending cases and thanked the committee for authorizing new positions to help address workload.
Interim County Administrator Mark Humbert reported that the 2027 budget planning process has started: capital planning began in February and departments have submitted proposals to the Board of Supervisors in advance of the April Board meeting; departments will have an opportunity in May committee meetings to present and discuss submissions. Humbert said the formal budget process will open in June and noted that personnel entries will not be included at that early stage this year, reflecting a change in the timeline.
The committee set the next meeting for May 5, 2026 at 9:00 a.m.; the meeting adjourned at 10:04 a.m.
