The Board of Zoning Appeals voted to issue a Favorable Recommendation to City Council for a wastewater treatment facility to be located at 2051 E 121st Ave after a presentation from Al Stong of Commonwealth Engineering. Stong said the project is part of a judicial agreement with the Indiana Department of Environmental Management and is in Phase 3 of 4, with projected completion in Summer 2028; he said the proposed site was vetted by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers dating back to 2021.
Stong told the board that, "over the past ten years, the City's wastewater system has discharged 150 million gallons of raw sewage into receiving systems and had 357 basement floods." A nearby landowner requested a 90-day deferral to allow the Lake County Drainage Board to address local drainage; Stong said he would work with the drainage board if site-specific drainage issues were confirmed. The board voted unanimously to recommend the project to City Council, adopting the Findings of Fact.
