Board begins second reading of internet/device policy; administrators say phone violations won’t trigger suspension

The board began a second reading of the internet-enabled device policy and heard clarifications about how the district plans to handle violations and medical accommodations ahead of a scheduled vote on Aug. 18.
Chair noted there were no significant changes from the public session and that the policy would move forward for a vote if no substantive changes are raised. Board members asked specifically whether the policy would affect students with medical conditions and how monitoring or accommodations would be managed; administrators said families should raise individual needs so staff can work on case-by-case solutions.
On disciplinary approach, an administrator described a graduated set of daily expectations and consequences and said explicitly that cell-phone violations would not result in suspension. “The 1st time is the phone's taken away, kept at the office, still get it at the end of the day. The 2nd time, a parent would need to come in and get it…And then the 3rd time would be more of whether it's a 5 week…You turn your phone in when you come in in the morning,” Greg said. He added that suspensions would be reserved for issues such as insubordination or refusal, not for device policy violations.
The board plans a vote of acceptance at the Aug. 18 meeting unless further changes are requested before then.
