Committee moves to add enforcement language for district personal communication device policy

Several members argued the existing policy had not been enforced consistently and pressed for language that gives the superintendent clear authority to act.
One committee member proposed specific language to add under OE 11: "veil the superintendent may not fail to respond to student behaviors that disrupt learning including noncompliance of district personal communication devices." Staff and other members supported placing enforcement language under OE 11 to give the policy "teeth" and accountability, rather than creating a new operational expectation.
District staff agreed to collect early data on disciplinary actions tied to cell phones (infractions logged in the student information system) and present an update in October so the board could compare outcomes and enforcement effects. Members agreed to place the revised language on the consent agenda for the upcoming business meeting unless a member requests it be pulled for discussion.
