The Sunnyvale School District presented a human-centered plan for artificial intelligence that will prioritize staff AI literacy before classroom deployments. Superintendent (introduced in the meeting as Doctor Krasnik) said the district has spent 14 months building a foundation and selected a 20-member AI staff task force from a competitive pool of 54 applicants drawn from roughly 850 employees.
"AI literacy is the collection of skills and knowledge a person needs to confidently understand, ethically use, and critically evaluate AI tools in the real world," a district presenter said, describing the task force's charge to recommend implementation strategies and acceptable-use policies for board review in winter and spring. The presenter said the group's work will emphasize adult-focused use cases and staff deployment of secured tools such as Google Gemini.
The superintendent outlined three primary partnerships: AIEU (a nonprofit focused on AI readiness and policy), PlayLabs (a nonprofit tool platform with an MOU on the meeting agenda), and Digital Promise (the League of Innovative Schools). Trustees requested continued updates; the superintendent said regular written follow-ups would be added to weekly materials and invited trustees to observe task-force meetings. The district expects the next task-force meeting on Oct. 22 and said formal policy recommendations will be returned to the board for discussion.
