Board approves zoning amendment clarifying data center language; supervisor urges stronger limits

Buffalo County supervisors on May 18 approved Ordinance #26-05-02, an amendment to the county zoning ordinance that clarifies and expands language relating to data centers.
Cale Severson, who presented the amendment to the board, said data center definitions had already been added to the zoning code and the new ordinance provides additional clarifying language. Supervisor Steve Nelson moved to approve the amendment; Mr. Stanton seconded and the motion carried. Supervisor Bruegger asked the board to consider even stronger restrictions on data centers in future actions.
During the public comment period, online participant Mike O'Connor stated he supported the data center ordinance amendment. Supervisor Stanton later asked the board to explore ways the county could generate revenue from data centers, an item noted for a future agenda. The board did not adopt any revenue measures at this meeting.
