Advisory board recommends Ordinance 4044 to advance Cleveland Avenue redevelopment

Dr. Long, who presented the update, told the board the plan reflects nearly two years of work and multiple listening sessions. Attorney Ryan Knight read the ordinance title into the record as 'Ordinance number 4044, an ordinance of the city council of the city of Fort Myers, Florida, amending the city code chapter 26 community development and improvements' and identifying the Cleveland Avenue redevelopment subarea. Dr. Long said the project team included Brinley Peters and Associates and subcontractors and that the plan includes a printed list of master-plan action items staff will use to prioritize implementation. "So what I'm asking you today is to recommend that the Board of Commissioners approve this," Dr. Long said.
Staff said county review is underway (30 days for comment), the planning board found the plan consistent with the comprehensive plan, and a City Council public hearing is scheduled for June 16 (the meeting starts at 4 p.m. but the item cannot be heard until after 5:15 p.m.). Dr. Long described priority 'brick-and-mortar' projects such as trailheads, pedestrian crossings, speed‑management work on US-41, and lot assembly to facilitate redevelopment. She also said staff is coordinating with the school system about moving a fence behind the hospital to allow trail connectivity while protecting students.
The motion to recommend approval was made and seconded and passed by voice vote with no recorded opposition. The advisory board's recommendation now goes to City Council for the scheduled public hearing.
