Erin Dyer, speaking as a parent, told trustees the district has failed students in athletics and that facility and coaching shortcomings limit opportunities. "Our facilities here in Tehachapi are embarrassing," she said, and argued that lower coach pay and a lack of competitive evaluation practices have reduced the quality of coaching across sports.
Dyer cited her son Thaddeus’s experience — he placed highly in regional competitions and will attend Chico State on scholarship — to illustrate her point that students with parental advocates can succeed while other talented students are being left behind. She urged the board to improve coaching, pay and facility access so local athletes can compete with other Kern County schools.
The board received Dyer’s comments during the public comment period; no formal response or action was recorded at the meeting.
