Fort Myers staff requested and council approved multiple items to advance the Winkler Avenue corridor improvement project, which will add two new traffic signals (Executive Circle/Winkler and Alderman's Walk/Winkler), modify median openings, and extend turn lanes to address growing traffic from recent development.
City engineer Nicole Setzer explained that the work requires moving some distribution poles and installing transformers to accommodate new signal equipment; the city coordinated with Florida Power & Light and requested a price not to exceed $64,712 for one intersection and $6,745 for another portion. Council also approved a supplemental task authorization (construction engineering inspection services) for Johnson Engineering for $159,800 and 400 calendar days and a construction manager at risk guaranteed-maximum-price authorization related to the corridor work.
Councilmember Geraldo and staff discussed traffic projections and access management studies completed earlier; Setzer said access management and turn-lane extensions are part of the plan and that the city will close unused median openings to improve safety and operations. The items were approved without opposition.
