ZBA approves amended, taller Parker's Kitchen wall sign after applicant revises request

The Horry County Zoning Board of Appeals approved a wall-sign variance for Parker's Kitchen on Highway 17 after the applicant amended the requested overall height at the podium to a smaller, clarified measurement.

Kenneth Scribe, representing Parker's Kitchen, told the board the stacked sign is necessary because the building’s glass facade makes a linear sign unreadable and that the proposed letters and logo would improve visibility. "The signs we're proposing is how it is 54.34, inches tall where the maximum height is 24 inches," he said while explaining the stacked layout and how the sign fits the facade. Staff reminded the board that the Little River overlay limits the overall sign height (letters plus any logo/background) to 24 inches for a wall sign and that different submittals showed differing overall heights — staff cited 67.125 inches in one submittal and a larger 78.75 inches in another.

Faced with inconsistent plan dimensions, the applicant asked to amend the variance to seek 67 and 8/16 inches overall (including the logo) with specified letter heights; the applicant said they would "live with the 67" rather than pursue the larger measurement. A board member moved to approve the amended height as presented at the podium and the board approved the variance by roll call. Staff noted the applicant may need to resubmit if future sign drawings use different dimensions and recommended standard conditions to ensure the approved dimensions match the installed sign.

The board and staff also discussed that the proposed wall sign totals about 75 square feet — within the building’s allowed square footage but above the overlay’s letter-height limit — and that a monument sign on the street would be the primary roadside identifier for fast-moving traffic.
