Webster, addressing the Horry County Council during its March 4 meeting, said the county’s firefighting response has been substantial as crews battle a blaze in the Carolina Forest area. "As of now, at this point, we still have we got 2,059 acres, about 30% contained," Webster said, and added that aerial assets were a "game changer" that helped prevent further losses.
The council chair opened the meeting by thanking first responders and the public for coordinating sheltering and supplies. Webster said eight neighborhoods were evacuated, mutual-aid teams from across South Carolina have contributed resources and more than 500 personnel remain on the incident. He said the county has issued at least one citation related to an outside burning and that an investigation into the fire’s origin is ongoing. Council members urged continued vigilance as a forecasted weather event could complicate containment efforts.
