Niles council awards $57,642 tree-removal contract to Ark Tree Services after public comment

The Niles City Council accepted a $57,642 bid from Ark Tree Services for DPW tree removal and charged the expense to the DPW Tree Removal Account. Councilmember Michael Thompson moved the motion and Councilmember Jessica Nelson seconded; the motion passed 6–1 on roll call with Councilmember Gretchen Bertschy voting no.
Public commenters urged the council to consider Hartline Tree Service, the incumbent contractor. Jason Webber of Hartline Tree Service told the council that, even though his bid was somewhat higher, ‘‘they should be considered as they have done the job for the past couple of years.’’ Brenton Harrell also advocated for Hartline, while Noah Borzsei introduced Ark Tree Services and offered to answer questions about their bid. Resident Marie Weimer cautioned the council that low bids had not always been accepted in prior years and suggested it sometimes makes sense to select a higher bid to avoid regretting the choice.
Council’s roll call on the motion recorded yes votes from Rogers, McAfee, Weimer, Nelson, Thompson and Boggs; Bertschy voted no and Koebel was absent. The motion carried, and the contract will be charged to the DPW Tree Removal Account.
