The Tuscaloosa City Schools board recognized three students who placed at the 26th Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) National Leadership Conference during its Aug. 4 meeting.
Roslyn Evans, a Central High School teacher and FBLA advisor, introduced the students and told the board they competed against roughly 18,000 peers from across 49 states, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Canada. "I was proud mama, proud mama," Evans said, noting that two of the winners are the district's first-ever middle-level FBLA national champions.
Student speakers described how FBLA helped them build leadership and public-speaking skills. Chloe Covington, who identified herself to the board, said FBLA "is a thing that is going to provide you with the skills you need to succeed," and urged expanding the program to more schools.
Board members praised the students' poise and presentation. The chair and other members congratulated the winners and encouraged continued support for career and leadership programs in the district. The recognition was listed as item 5 on the meeting agenda and took place before the board handled consent and personnel items.
