Police report declines in fatalities as Fort Myers steps up traffic enforcement on McGregor Boulevard

Police Chief Jason Feals said the department increased traffic stops and ticketing in the most recent quarter and that fatalities have dropped compared with the same period last year: "From '23 to '24 ... we are less than 0.5 fatalities, which is good." Chief Feals described targeted operations — 31 traffic operations in the first quarter of 2025 with several focusing on the McGregor corridor — and noted steps such as refreshed signage, red-flag warnings and outreach to trucking companies about new restrictions.
Councilmembers asked about additional traffic-calming options, camera technology and resources for the traffic unit; the chief said technology investments are in his budget request and the department is coordinating with engineering and public works on signs and speed-reduction measures. The council asked staff to return with data and potential resource requests for future budget consideration.
