Drainage Board says budget limits delay dike work; schedules follow-up meetings

Chairperson Shawn Hostler told attendees that the county does not have money set aside this year to pursue either alternative and reminded the public that budget hearings are scheduled at the end of June. "Everything takes money and this year they do not have money set aside to do either in our budget," Hostler said. Commissioners Kelly VanderWal and Dave Miller thanked the public for attending and said Banner Associates follow-up meetings will continue; Commissioner Miller emphasized the objective is to redirect water from the diversion channel back to the main channel to protect a west bridge from erosion, not to solve all flooding issues.
Commissioner Doug Post, who said he lives near the area, asked that the feasibility work consider channel cleaning and other steps to avoid harming homeowners if flow is restored. The board made no formal decision on reconstruction and adjourned after agreeing to more study and to consider budget implications at the end-of-June hearings.
