Alsip honors nine students with scholarships from local chamber and industrial association

Mayor Ryan opened the Aug. 3 Alsip Village Board meeting by recognizing nine scholarship recipients chosen by the Alsip Industrial Association and the Alsip Chamber of Commerce.
Ernie Franker, representing the Industrial Association, told the board the group’s annual fundraising — led by a golf outing and corporate sponsors — has now exceeded $250,000 since the scholarship program began. "Since the beginning of this developing and the, the scholarship, we have surpassed raising over a $250,000," Franker said.
Mayor Ryan read each recipient’s name and college plans, including Sophia Lynn White (Grand Valley State University), Connor James McCall (Moraine Valley/Marin Valley referenced in the record), Nora Freighter (Governor’s State), Augustine Ernesto Roca and Logan Burke (University of Illinois Urbana‑Champaign), William Kleina (Moraine Valley) and Derek Anthony Clark II (University of Illinois Chicago). The mayor invited families and association members to pose for photographs after certificates were presented.
The mayor thanked the Alsip Industrial Association and the Chamber of Commerce for underwriting book fees and other college costs. The ceremony was a standing agenda item and did not require board action.
The association cited the golf outing and corporate sponsors as primary fundraising sources; organizers said 72 golfers and 18 corporate sponsors contributed to this year’s proceeds.
