Residents and organizers ask council for event support, backpack giveaway and insurance release after fire

Several community members spoke during the public-comment period at the Aug. 11 meeting. Charles Nelson, owner of On Base Productions and chair of the Niles Public Art Commission, said the group hosted a backpack giveaway (including hygiene products) and announced a battery-recycling event on Aug. 24 from 2–5 p.m. He also said the public-art commission is developing a process for mural applications. Dennis Starbuck of Starbuck Construction spoke on behalf of the owner of 703 Maple St. seeking release of insurance funds to proceed with construction after a fire; Mayor Shelton asked Mr. Starbuck to remain after the meeting so City Administrator Huff could discuss next steps. Lisa Croteau announced the Home-Grown Market will run through September and noted Front Street Pizza received a Match on Main grant.
