Waukegan unveils new regional 9-1-1 communications center; mayor highlights storm response

City leaders on Aug. 3 celebrated the opening of the Waukegan Metropolitan Emergency Communications Center, a regional 9-1-1 dispatch facility that officials said will improve coordination among police, fire and emergency medical services.
Mayor Cunningham thanked first responders for storm recovery efforts and announced emergency dumpsters and the city’s "Rebuild Waukegan" road repaving program. Chief Edgar Navarro of the Waukegan Police Department and Commander Lopez addressed the council, and Fire Chief Greg Pazier described the operational benefits of a modern dispatch facility: “Having a facility that people enjoy coming to work and have all the technology that they need to do their job is of the utmost importance,” he said.
Officials said the center provides enhanced telecommunications tools expected to speed response times and coordinate services across neighboring jurisdictions. Council members and staff credited past administrations and local development partners for supporting the project; planning and contractor partners were acknowledged at the meeting.
