University facilities staff updated trustees on campus drought planning and water-wise measures. The university manages approximately 1,500 acres and 12,000 trees and said it is reducing nonfunctional turf, expanding water-wise landscaping, deploying irrigation-technology monitoring and reporting water usage to the Division of Water Resources.
Presenters noted that campus usage is under 2% of state water use and that the university plans continued landscaping changes and technology deployment to reduce potable-water demand. Trustees and staff discussed public interest and the expectation that the university set an example in water stewardship.
