Trustees voted to create a new Bachelor of Science in Artificial Intelligence after a presentation from Vivek Sridhar, introduced as an associate professor. Sridhar said the program is designed to train students in building and deploying AI systems and will be supported by an industry steering committee that includes representatives from NVIDIA, Google DeepMind and other employers.
Sridhar described the curriculum as technical and rigorous rather than a “light” track, combining core computer science, math and ethics coursework. Board members asked curricular and workforce-related questions; Sridhar emphasized the program’s intention to complement, not replace, existing computer-science degrees. The motion to approve the degree passed on voice vote without recorded opposition in the public transcript.
"I'm here to seek approval for this proposed degree in artificial intelligence," Sridhar said during his presentation, framing the proposal around student preparation and ethical deployment of AI in the workforce.
