Calusa Nature Center director seeks council support for boardwalk repairs and expanded programming

Eric Raditz, executive director of the Calusa Nature Center and Planetarium, briefed council on site improvements, programming increases and outstanding capital needs. Raditz said the center is showing positive momentum after recent planetarium renovations and new programming, but flagged deferred maintenance at the boardwalk and other infrastructure.
On the boardwalk he cited an estimated repair cost of approximately $1,000,000 and said the structure is roughly 1,776 linear feet and was damaged by Hurricane Irma. "There are about 1,776 [linear feet], and it was... Irma," Raditz said when council asked about scope and cost. Raditz also outlined plans for outreach and an expanded events calendar, and described revenue opportunities — including potential revenue from holiday and ticketed events — that could help support long‑term sustainability.
Council members thanked Raditz for recent improvements and asked staff to explore grant and partnership avenues, prioritize a maintenance schedule and examine how capital programs (including possible GO Bond alignment) could support phased repairs.
