"How is the state putting in 671,000 and municipal taxpayers are putting in 1,000,000 dollars for a state highway?" Pereira asked, criticizing the use of city capital bond money to fund a state-controlled road. Council member Ernie Newton countered that using municipal funds can unlock state and federal resources and that city support can improve safety for constituents. "They're our constituents and we want to make it safe for our constituents," he said.
After discussion the item was put to a vote; the motion passed with one recorded 'no' vote by Maria Pereira. Councilors said they recognized public-safety concerns on the corridor but disagreed about which level of government should bear cost and whether municipal matching funds were appropriate to secure larger grants.
