The City Council authorized staff to advertise a public hearing on May 19, 2025, for the planned acquisition of 2110 and 2112 Hoople Street from Midwest Equities LLC for $520,000 plus closing costs, to be used for Midtown Fort Myers redevelopment. Community Development Director Steve Billing said the city is not committing to a specific redevelopment plan but wants to hold property that could be part of future stadium-area redevelopment.
"We thought it was time to be a little bit more proactive in buying some of the property," Billing said, explaining the acquisition would place the city in a stronger position should stadium redevelopment proceed. The property lies in Ward 4; council moved and approved the permission to advertise by voice vote.
The council did not adopt a purchase ordinance at this meeting; the advertising step begins the public-notice process before the May 19 hearing where details, negotiations and any tenant impacts will be discussed.
