Bluff amends fire restrictions to ban fireworks inside WUI; one councilmember abstains

The Bluff Town Council on July 7 amended the town’s fire restrictions (Ord. 2026-06) to restrict open fires within town boundaries and to prohibit fireworks in the town-designated Wildland Urban Interface through Oct. 31, 2026.
Staff presented a revised ordinance that limits open fires while explicitly allowing charcoal, gas, propane and electric grills provided they are contained and water is present. The revision also removed an existing exception for certain public-lands-stage practices and tightened language to permit the town to revert to Stage 1 restrictions if conditions improve.
The ordinance text presented to the council stated the change would "restrict open fires within Town boundaries and prohibit the ignition, discharge or use of fireworks within the Town of Bluff Wildland Urban Interface Zone." After discussion about wording (particularly around contained fire pits and grills), the council voted. Hornsby, Davila, Ewing and Wade voted in favor; Councilmember Gary Haws recorded an abstention. The measure passed 4–0–1.
Councilmembers said the amendment was intended to reduce fire risk in mapped WUI areas ahead of summer holidays; staff will monitor conditions and return the council to Stage 1 if fire danger decreases.
