Parent urges board to elevate academic recognition for middle-school students

Lisonbee Appleby, who identified herself to the board as a parent and as a teacher, urged the board to expand public recognition of academic achievement at the middle-school level.
"I have watched my daughter in her hour a day with the cross country team and her meets and the pictures, and it's gonna be in a yearbook, and it's excellent," Appleby said, then urged that academic honors receive similar public attention: "I think the academics need to have shining spotlights on them as much as everyone else does." She proposed a single-night honors event with certificates and a modest reception as a repeatable model.
Board members thanked Appleby for her suggestion and noted staff would consider whether an honors-night model could be added to school-site recognition plans.
