Council repeal gives pump house a reprieve; board seeks environmental sampling for drums on site

The board was told that the City Council on Dec. 22 repealed the prior council resolution related to the pump house, including a demolition provision, effectively pressing a "reset" button and giving the community a renewed chance to seek collective solutions for the site's future.
"It seems like the city kinda decided to just kind of press the reset button on this whole thing," the chair said, describing the council action and urging proactive follow-up. Board members pressed about potential contamination and storage on site: one member estimated "probably 50, 55-gallon drums sitting there full of something," and planning staff said Terracon had been asked to do sampling but that, at present, "we don't" know what is in them.
Members urged that the board and staff move proactively — through committees and strategic planning — to engage the public, obtain environmental testing results, and identify remediation or reuse options so the site does not return to a contentious demolition cycle.
