Committee approves allowing UTVs on state highways for agriculture purposes
Summary
Senate Bill 2596 would permit utility terrain vehicles (UTVs) to operate on certain state highways or county roads when used for agricultural work; the committee approved the measure and it moves to Calendar.
Senator Sutherland told the committee that SB2596 creates an exemption allowing UTVs to be operated on state highways or county roads at speeds of up to 75 miles per hour (or on roads posted up to 55 mph) when used solely for agricultural purposes such as delivering hay or fixing fences. "Farmers need to get to their farms to deliver bales of hay to fix their fences," the sponsor said.
Committee members offered no substantive opposition during the short presentation. The bill passed by roll call vote and will be placed on the calendar for further consideration by the full Senate.
