Public commenters urge end to prayers at council meetings, water for trees and report bus incident to RTC

During the citizens' participation portion of the Aug. 5 meeting, several residents raised community concerns.
Shoshana urged the council to "end invocations, the praying, because this is not a church," arguing clergy can invoke confidentiality exceptions to reporting in some cases and calling for separation of religion and city proceedings. She asked the council to "Remove the prayer." Eric King, speaking about trees and heat resilience, pressed the council to prioritize funding and creative approaches to hydrate and preserve street trees as the climate gets hotter and drier: "We'd love to have a lot more trees." Another commenter, Eric Melchizedek Christ Nimrod, described an incident in which a Deuce bus door closed on his arm and said he had difficulty filing a complaint with the Regional Transportation Commission; the mayor and staff advised that the RTC is the appropriate venue for the complaint and that two councilmembers sit on the RTC.
Council members acknowledged the comments and directed staff and members to follow up where relevant (for example, to the Regional Transportation Commission or to public works for tree programs). The public comments were recorded for the meeting minutes and the council did not take immediate action on the policy suggestions that morning.
