The Loma Prieta Joint Union Elementary board recognized students and volunteers Tuesday for the district's first summer reading challenge, which organizers said drew participation from nearly 29% of students and added up to 4,315 hours of reading.
"We had 4,315 hours of reading done collectively by nearly 29% of the district students," the presenter told the board, thanking staffers and volunteers who ran the program. Param, the library lead who ran the initiative at the hub, described the June 6–Aug. 8 program and said family points and a wide definition of readingincluding read-alouds, video books and e-readershelped drive participation.
Organizers highlighted student milestones: 16 students logged 50+ hours and several recorded 100+ hours. The board member presenting the recognition said the district will bring forward two grants for library collections and announced a book fair later in the fall. Parents and student volunteers were acknowledged for providing meeting and prize support that kept the cost down.
Board members said they were pleased with the turnout and encouraged continued community support, including the home-and-school club's fundraising and volunteer efforts that helped supply prizes and program infrastructure.
