Volunteer presents Pacific Crest Trail registry data; council seeks ways to attract hikers

Noelle Harrison, a local volunteer with the Pacific Crest Trail network, presented 2025 trail registry findings and offered ideas to attract hikers to Dunsmuir for overnight stays. Harrison said she reviewed registry entries and summarized that 1,085 hikers signed the local logbook in the period she examined and estimated average expenditures of about $9,855 for domestic hikers and $11,000 for international hikers (with an average daily spend of about $70). She urged low‑cost promotions such as temporary banners, small prize drawings and partner restaurant offers to encourage visitors to stop and spend in town.
Mayor Lucchese and several council members thanked Harrison; one council member suggested the city’s community grant program (which currently has available tiers around the $1,000 level) could help fund promotional activities. Council members discussed scheduling a special presentation if more time were needed for a fuller tourism plan.
Harrison also described the FarOut app as a source of trail comments and recommended the city consider better transportation links and consistent business hours to capture trail traffic. Council agreed staff would follow up about using the community grants to pilot small promotional measures.
