Solano County continues Vallejo policing contract discussions after union raises staffing concerns

Sheriff Tom Ferrara and staff briefed the board on progress toward a proposed contract for the Solano County Sheriff’s Office to provide temporary law‑enforcement services to the City of Vallejo. Ferrara said city approval and written confirmation related to Department of Justice conditions are in place, but the county and the Deputy Sheriffs Association (DSA) are still finalizing meet‑and‑confer terms.
Ferrara asked the board to continue the item to an August meeting to finish negotiations. Jason Ackley, assistant to Vallejo’s city manager, urged the board to approve the contract once outstanding labor issues are resolved, saying the contract would support Vallejo’s staffing and public safety needs. Ryan Wallace, president of the DSA, told the board the union remains concerned that the sheriff’s office lacks capacity to meet both the contract obligations and county patrol needs and asked that the county either define a minimum staffing standard or explore a reduced contract scope if unresolved.
After public comment and discussion, the board agreed to continue the item to allow further meet‑and‑confer with the DSA and to finalize terms of the proposed contract.
