Advisory committee removes 'family practitioner' entry, adopts broader 'primary care provider' definition

HAC members voted to remove a separate 'family practitioner' definition and to adopt an expanded "primary care provider" definition listing general practitioners, pediatricians, nurse practitioners, PAs and others as examples to better reflect who students might see for care.
Committee members debated whether to keep separate entries for 'family practitioner' and 'primary care provider' and whether the language should be tailored to school‑age students. One participant urged clarity about who is meant by 'provider': "Primary care provider would include a pediatrician. It would include OB GYN — usually. It would include a family practice," a committee member said during the discussion.
After debate, a motion to remove the separate 'family practitioner' definition was made and seconded by committee members and approved by raised‑hand agreement. The committee then passed a separate motion to adopt a revised primary care provider definition that lists example providers (general practitioner, family practitioner, pediatrician, gynecologist, nurse practitioner, physician assistant, internist) to make classroom language clearer and more inclusive.
