Kearney hires KC Testing after geotechnical concerns at Lions Park splash pad

Parks staff told the board they hired KC Testing for independent geotechnical testing at Lions Park after discovering evidence that an old house with a basement once occupied part of the site where the splash pad now sits. "We've hired KC Testing," Eric said, framing the work as an additional safeguard to reduce the risk of sinkholes under the splash pad.
Board members discussed demolition history and the potential for settlement where basements had been pushed in and covered during previous demolition. Ryan and staff said the geotechnical assessment is intended to confirm subsurface stability prior to proceeding with further riprap or surfacing work. Eric emphasized transparency: staff will share findings and any recommended mitigation before authorizing construction.
Separately, Eric reported a carryover project to finish a dechlorination system and place riprap along a reach at Lions Park; some riprap has been placed but additional material is dependent on equipment availability. The board also reviewed timing and logistics for completing those capital items.
