Council approves small ‘waterfall’ grants, names mural and court resurfacing winners and reopens remaining funds

The Dunsmuir City Council on Feb. 19 voted to adopt the finance committee’s recommendations for the city’s waterfall grant program and to reopen remaining funds for additional applications. The finance committee reported that eight groups applied at the $10,000 tier (two awards available), four at $5,000 (one awarded) and several at $2,500 (multiple awards); the committee disqualified some $10,000 and $5,000 proposals that did not meet program eligibility. “We had 8 groups apply for the $10,000 level, and there were only 2 available,” the finance presenter said while summarizing the review process.

Council approved awards that included a Dunsmuir High School mural reinstallation project intended as a student learning opportunity and a Mount Chestnut Pickleball Club proposal to resurface courts and add pickleball striping with an app‑access locking box for equipment. Ken, a county pickleball ambassador who spoke during public comment, said the proposal would revive local courts and help attract players and visitors: “I think it’s a perfect time to start expanding pickleball back to Dunsmuir where it started,” he told the council. The council also voted to reopen remaining unallocated grant tiers for roughly a one‑month reapplication window in March to distribute leftover funds.
