Avon awards $8,000 in community event grants and approves Lions Club fireworks

The Avon Town Council approved $8,000 in Community Events Grants and separately approved a request for fireworks at the Lions Club Carnival.
Council awarded $3,500 to the Avon Lions Club for the October 2–4, 2026 carnival, $3,500 to the New England Ballet Theatre to support the Farmington Valley Dance Festival (Aug. 14–16, 2026), and $1,000 to the Girl Scouts of Connecticut for the Race Through Her Story Family Fun Run (Sept. 13, 2026). Council member Barthel abstained from the Girl Scouts vote because of her involvement with that event; the other awards were approved by majority vote. Assistant Town Manager explained these are the first recommendations in the new fiscal year and that Juneteenth and other events will be budgeted separately.
The council also approved the Lions Club request to host professional fireworks for the carnival, accepting a quoted price of $10,000 and setting Friday, Oct. 2, 2026 as the display date with Saturday, Oct. 3 as the rain date (motion by Ms. Ausiello, seconded by Mrs. Bratton). Council discussed that proceeds from the Lions Club event historically go back to community programs, including a Special Needs Fund.
