The board honored two students of the month: Trish Castro (Special Education) and Natachi Bennett (JCCS). Clarissa Tuttle introduced the Special Education recognition, and teacher Catherine Reyes shared Trish's story of moving from the Philippines, navigating hearing loss and language access challenges, and progressing through DHH services to become a model of perseverance.
"Trish never gave up," Catherine Reyes said during the presentation, describing the student's journey through language barriers and academic supports that helped her grow. Dr. Valerie Garrett presented Natachi Bennett as the JCCS student of the month and noted that staff unanimously supported her selection; Garrett said Bennett met graduation requirements as stipulated by the California Department of Education. The board also recognized School Board Recognition Month with flowers and thank-you remarks for the trustees' volunteer service.
The recognitions were ceremonial; the board moved through the rest of its agenda after the presentations.
