Dunsmuir council authorizes letter supporting Friends of Dunsmuir Library mural grant

The Dunsmuir City Council on March 5 voted to authorize a city representative to sign a letter of support for the Friends of Dunsmuir Library’s grant application to install a mural on the library’s north wall.
City staff told the council the library building is owned by the city and that the project team has also applied for a separate wall-repair grant; staff recommended the council provide a letter supporting the grant application but not the mural’s final design. "Now we'll note this in no way says that you have approved the actual mural itself or, you know, design aspects, that sort of thing," said Blake, the city's counsel and staff presenter.
Staff said the Friends of Dunsmuir Library will handle the grant application and that the letter is simply an expression of support to help secure grant funding. A member of the public offered technical advice on repairing deteriorating plaster on the wall before any mural work begins. The council moved, seconded and approved the motion to authorize the mayor or city manager to sign the attached letter of support.
The authorization allows the Friends to proceed with the grant application process; it does not commit the city to final mural approval or installation. Staff and the Friends group will return with design discussions and any necessary follow-up once the wall repairs and grant conditions are addressed.
