Committee weighs Purdy Park shade structure using $20,000 grant

The infrastructure committee heard a presentation from Eric Shear, president of Building Together, about a proposed shade structure at Purdy Park funded in part by a DeKalb County community grant. "We received that, and that goes towards that OSLID-related grant," Shear said, adding the committee currently has $20,000 available for the shade structure and must spend the funds by December. The group reviewed manufacturer quotes for 20-by-20 and 25-by-25 structures and photos of comparable installations at Lions Park.
Committee members discussed siting the structure between two birch trees, size trade-offs and whether volunteers could install the steel-frame structure. One vendor quote for a 20-by-20 canopy (purchase only, not installed) was cited at about $13,470; a larger 25-by-25 option was quoted closer to $15,570. Members noted that buying the structure now would also count toward matching funds on a larger OSLID-related project if the installation and any required concrete meet the grant program's standards. "We have to purchase it — we don't have to have it installed — but we have to have it purchased," a committee member said.
The committee agreed to recommend the project package to the regular board meeting for final consideration and noted that further engineering or DNR/Department review may be needed if the group wants the purchase to be applied as match for a larger grant. Frank said he would follow up with Kramer Construction on concrete slab dimensions and report back at the next meeting.
