Planning and development director Charles Bloom told the board he is looking at a unified development code (UDC) amendment to treat covered carports as their own independent structure rather than as an accessory use.
Bloom said the amendment would set location standards and define side- and front-yard rules to give people clearer guidance about where and how to build covered carports. “This would be to set standards for those type of structures to allow them in other areas of the lot,” Bloom said, and the plan would include language to bring carport standards to the board for consideration.
He said the amendment is part of a broader effort to clarify the code and reduce situations where applicants are disappointed that structures can’t be built where they want them. Bloom offered no specific draft language at the meeting and said the proposal would be considered in future meetings.
