Recreation coordinator hired; longtime recreation leader honored as Smarr retires

County Administrator Shawn Utt introduced Andy Rhudy as Smyth County's new Recreation Coordinator and former Coordinator Jeff Smarr announced he would step back into retirement. The Board accepted a resolution of appreciation honoring Smarr's role as the county's first recreation employee and leader.
Rhudy reported fall football signups at about 85% with games scheduled to begin Aug. 15, 2026, and said cheer and football enrollments were nearly even. Staff discussed forming adult coed teams to join a Chilhowie-organized adult coed softball league this fall and pursuing grants for field lighting. Rhudy also outlined future projects including a proposed "Blue Line Run" honoring fallen law-enforcement officers and expanded town–county coordination on youth sports.
