House approves bill allowing temporary suspension of child support when custody changes

Representative Pope summarized Senate File 542, saying the bill allows payments in certain situations to be paused if physical custody shifts to the parent who had been paying support. "If physical custody changes to the pay-the parent paying support, the payments can stop until such time as that parent no longer has physical custody," the sponsor said on the floor.
Representative Bagnoski called it a "good compromise, common-sense bill" and urged support. The House placed the bill on final passage and recorded a near-unanimous vote: 89 yeas, 0 nays, 11 absent. The clerk declared the bill to have received a constitutional majority and passed the House.
