The DeWitt County Board on Nov. 25 held a Truth in Taxation hearing for the DeWitt County Ambulance District in which board members heard a proposal to increase the district's property tax levy by 39.30% for 2025, raising estimated special-purpose property tax collections from $495,348.40 in 2024 to $690,000.
Mrs. Tilley, who ran the hearing after Chairman Matthews yielded the floor, read the formal notice and explained the district's rationale: "this increase should allow for a six month carryover that would be used to pay for the services and not have to borrow money while waiting on taxes to be collected." She also reported the proposed ambulance-service tax rate as 0.1028.
According to the notice read at the hearing, the district reported $495,348.40 in special-purpose taxes extended or abated for 2024 and listed $690,000 as the proposed special-purpose levy for 2025 (a 39.30% increase). The notice also states that property taxes extended for debt service and public building commission leases were $0.00 for both 2024 and the estimated 2025 figures.
No members of the public were present to provide testimony or ask questions at the hearing. After the presentation and reading of the notice, Ferguson moved to adjourn; the motion was seconded by Tilley, a voice vote carried, and the meeting was adjourned at 5:41 p.m.
The public notice included contact information for residents who wished to present testimony: Dee Dee Rentmeister, County Administrator, DeWitt County Board, 201 W. Washington St., Clinton, IL, 217-935-7770. The notice notes that the corporate authority of the taxing district must explain the reasons for any proposed increase and permit persons desiring to be heard an opportunity to present testimony within reasonable time limits.
