Committee reviews cemetery maintenance rules and new survey markers to clarify lots

Staff reviewed the June cemetery tour and said the town will continue to maintain the mountain cemetery in a largely natural state while enforcing rules on permitted fencing. Staff reminded the committee that the town removed a regulation allowing chain-link fencing long ago, sent letters requiring removals, and will remove chain link while allowing posts to remain where appropriate.

Evan provided a separate project update on survey markers: crews are placing rebar at the corners of lots and will later set brass caps stamped with numbers. "They're starting just by putting rebar in the ground... and then they'll come back and set those brass caps," Evan said. Staff said the markers will help identify lots, might reveal parcels that cannot be sold as currently laid out, and will speed locating graves or headstones. Committee members noted the need for a cemetery plot improvement form for any owner-requested fencing and said staff would continue to work with families on compliant alternatives.
