District outlines math strategy and expands summer math academy; trustees press for outreach

District curriculum staff presented a multi-pronged math plan that included NWEA-to-CAST projections, a district common-assessment rollout and teacher inquiry cycles aimed at increasing high-impact instructional moves.
"If we wanna increase student learning, we also have to increase adult learning," Alejandro Sanchez Barajas, the district math TOSA, told trustees as he reviewed achievement and conditional growth-percentile data. The presentation showed pockets of acceleration (notably at El Monte High) alongside groups of students who remain low-achieving and not growing; the team said targeted in-class interventions and protected collaboration time for teachers are priority responses.
The board also discussed summer options. District staff reported 390 applications for the Rio Hondo Math Academy and described the Academys summer cohort data (504 students in a tracked cohort with a 12% DNF). Yolanda Emerson of Rio Hondo told trustees, "The math academy is for any student that wants to participate." Trustees pressed for more community outreach and asked staff to track academy cohorts through 11th-grade CAASPP (CAST) results to measure long-term impact. Several trustees requested additional morning orientation sessions and stronger principalslevel recruitment efforts to increase parent participation.
