El Monte High cheerleaders honored by district after national championships

The board recognized El Monte High Schools cheerleading team for winning multiple 2026 national championships, presenting certificates to coaches and lapel pins to student-athletes.
"They went to Dallas Fort Worth and they won the National Cheerleaders Association championship," said Eddie Cuevas, the El Monte High principal, recounting the teams season and travel disruptions. Coach Gabriel Gonzalez, introduced as the programs 17-year head coach, and several captains thanked parents, staff and the district. Trustees praised the athleteswork ethic and highlighted the programs contributions to school culture.
Certificates were read aloud for head coach Gabriel Gonzalez and assistant coaches Jose Sarmeno, Alexis Alvarez, Ruben Macias and Jimmy Dominguez; students were individually recognized and invited forward for photos. The board recessed briefly to allow student athletes and families to take photographs before continuing the meeting.
