Aging director urges auto-door openers at Pine St. office; commissioners direct staff to study cost

Lona Kelly, director of the Harvey County Department of Aging, told the board that automatic door openers were not included for the newly installed west entrance to the Pine Street building, where her department will be located. She said the entrance meets other ADA requirements but "without openers it will be difficult for handicapped and elderly individuals to access the building." County Administrator Kevin Frymire noted there will be handicap parking near the west entrance but that most visitors will be encouraged to enter through the east entrance, which does have door openers.
Kelly asked the commission to consider adding automated openers on the two doors at the west entrance and on the entry to her office inside the building. The commissioners agreed to direct staff to review the request and provide information, including estimated pricing, within the next few weeks. The direction covers both the external door mechanisms and the interior office entry; staff will return with options and cost estimates for commissioners to consider.
