The Gunter Independent School District board approved installation of secondary "flip" locks on classroom doors across the district's three campuses, a staff member said. The measure was presented as a safety upgrade to provide a rapid secondary locking option for teachers during a lockdown scenario.
"The flip lock has dead bolts, but it's a dead bolt that we can unlock quickly without without a key," the staff member said, describing the device as a quick-to-operate deadbolt-style mechanism. Staff said the locks would be installed on every classroom door at the high school, middle school and elementary school; the annex was excluded from the present scope and could be added later if students return to that building.
Funding for the installation was identified as local funds. A motion to approve the bid as presented was moved (recorded in the meeting as "Moved by Shelley"), seconded and passed by voice vote. Staff said the locks are intended to improve response options for teachers while allowing authorized entry from the outside.
