Wahkiakum commissioners opt to recruit permanent Fairgrounds Manager, discuss OPMA/PRA training
Summary
Following a work session with fair board members, the board agreed by consensus not to hire an interim Fairgrounds Manager and to move quickly to fill a permanent manager vacancy; a motion to require OPMA and PRA certification for fair board members died without a vote.
At a May 12 work session the Wahkiakum County Board of Commissioners and fair board members discussed fairgrounds operations, staffing and compliance with the Open Public Meetings Act and Public Records Act. Fair board members Brian McClain, Kay Walters, Becky Thacker and Erin Hill and several members of the public spoke about volunteer needs, current events and three vacancies on the fair board. Commissioner Mark Letham proposed requiring fair board members to complete OPMA and PRA training provided by the Secretary of State; the motion was made but no vote was taken and it died on the floor.
After discussion the board "agreed via consensus to not hire an interim Fairgrounds Manager and to instead quickly hire for the permanent position." The board intends to review applications in executive session next week and may schedule interviews the following week. Funding for the fair was described as coming primarily from fundraisers, grants and state Department of Agriculture support.
