Amelia County board sends FY27 proposed budget to public hearing

The Amelia County Board of Supervisors voted during a special meeting to send the proposed fiscal year 2027 budget to a public hearing in June, a procedural step that does not constitute approval of the budget.

Chair said the board was taking the step for timing reasons and emphasized the limited nature of the action: "What we are doing is just simply sending this to the public so we can hold a public hearing on it in June." The proposal, as presented by staff, does not include an increase in the county tax rates; the chair summarized the rates as "46¢ on the real estate and $4.25 on personal property." Staff also noted modest fee changes in water, sewer, environmental and animal-control services in the packet.

Staff member Eric told supervisors the figures are preliminary and subject to final balancing but said staff believed the board had enough information to proceed to advertising. Before publication, the board requested that staff circulate the exact advertisement language and numbers to supervisors for review to ensure the amounts reported for taxes and fees are correct. The motion to direct staff to coordinate advertising for the FY27 budget public hearing passed on a voice vote.
